Debating Club at HTL Wien 10
My class (3AHME) and two other groups (3BHME and 4AHMBT) enjoyed the debating club which took place on February 11th. Four really friendly students came to our school to teach us how to debate properly.
Warm up and Start
At the beginning we were divided into four smaller groups and then we learned the most important aspects about debating and presenting various topics.
They showed us how to use our body language effectively while speaking and we also improved our breathing. Doing it right helps to highlight important arguments in a discussion. To warm up, our team leader decided to tell us some tongue-twisters, and we also tried to speak very fast because this is the clue, if you want to win a debate.
In our groups we started discussions about several topics, for example, legalizing drugs. In our case half of the group was against and half of it was in favour of legalizing drugs. In addition, our goal was to find arguments why we think drugs are bad or if they can be seen as harmless substances. In the end, we analysed several drug abuse policies of various countries and highlighted the different effects of these policies.
In the final debate we were put into new groups and had to debate and discuss if a truth pill existed, should politicians be forced to take one or not? My group was against it and the other group had to find arguments why they should take it. On the one hand, it was really interesting to see who can make strong arguments and on the other hand it was funny too because no one wanted to lose the debate, so everyone tried their best.
